Summary of question
What is the Islamic law about using and transplanting animal organs to humans and also making other uses of those organs?
question
My question is that if growth of human stem cells in animal fetus bodies (like sheep) in order to use the organ of the generated fetus animal (with human-sheep cells) for tolerance induction in transplantation is fine? What is the Islamic law about using animal organs instead of human organs in transplantation? Is there any objection to it?
Concise answer
As per the Islamic law, there is no problem in using an animal organ to transplant it to a human body. However, it should be noted that the animal should not be tortured or left unprotected in the nature to live on itself when it might be in dire need of help and exposed to danger.
Answers received from the offices of grand religious authorities to the above question are as follows:[1]
Grand Ayatollah Sistani (may Allah grant him long life):
There is no problem in doing so.
Grand Ayatollah Saafi Gulpaigani (may Allah grant him long life):
There is no problem in growing and also using such animals to use their organs for grafting and transplantation to the human body.
His Eminence, Ayatollah Hadavi Tehran (may Allah grant him long life):
In the following cases, transplantation is not only permissible but it is mandatory also:
  1. If it does not lead to abuse and torture of animal.
  2. If it is the only way to treat Muslims and save their lives.
